In 1987 the World Synod of Bishops was convened by John Paul II to discuss “The Vocation and Mission of the Laity in the Church and in the World Twenty Years After the Second Vatican Council.”  On January 30, 1989, the Holy See issued the Holy Father’s post-synodal Apostolic exhortation entitled: Christifideles Laici, translated: The Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People.    The award recognizes individuals who consistently promote, support and welcome others into young adult ministry.  It honors those who demonstrate strong personal faith and compassion, who embrace the mission and vision of young adult ministry, and have been outstanding models of Christ’s faithful people.  The Young Adults of the Archdiocese of Boston would like to continue the tradition of awarding one of their peers in honor of Brian Cody, the inaugural recipient of the Christifedeles Laici Award in 1994.

Brian Cody was an exceptional young man who was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Scleroses (ALS).  The disease took his life on Tuesday, August 1, 1995.   Brian’s life was one of great faith and service to the Church, especially to Young Adult Ministry for the Archdiocese of Boston.  A native of Abington, MA, Brian was one of the grass roots organizers of Young Adult Ministry for the Archdiocese of Boston.  He was instrumental in creating Footprints, a young adult publication and he was the first editor and chairperson of the Young Adult Communications Committee.  Brian gave outstanding witness to the vocation and mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the world.

After being diagnosed with ALS, he reflected in an edition of Footprints “One thing I have not lost is my faith in God.  I have established as my highest unifying principles to know God better and develop my faith.  ALS may provide me with a greater opportunity to fulfill them.  I consider myself to be truly blessed.  I am genuinely happy – grateful for His blessing and for your prayers.”  Brian was not afraid to die.  He’d say he was “living” with ALS not ‘fighting it.”  It is in the spirit of Brian Cody that the Young Adults of the Archdiocese of Boston would like to honor the 2006 recipient of the Christifedeles Laici Award.
