Top 10 Premier League Flops of the 2025/26 Season: £680m Wasted! (2026)

The Premier League's summer transfer window has been a rollercoaster of fortunes, with some clubs splashing the cash on high-profile signings, while others have been left with egg on their faces. In this article, I'll be taking a deep dive into the top 10 flops of the season, analyzing the reasons behind their underwhelming performances and the implications for their respective clubs. From the most expensive signing to the biggest disappointment, we'll explore the stories behind these players and the impact they've had on their teams.

One thing that immediately stands out is the role of management in these flops. In my opinion, the appointment of Edu Gaspar at Nottingham Forest was a major mistake. While Forest thought his appointment was a coup, it turned out to be anything but. The club splashed out just under £200m, but there hasn't been a single hit. The standout stinkers are James McAtee, Dan Ndoye, Omari Hutchinson, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Dilane Bakwa, Douglas Luiz (loan), and Oleksandr Zinchenko (loan).

Another example of a flop is Tyler Dibling at Everton. The 20-year-old has only started four times in the Premier League and played 88 out of a possible 180 minutes in the Carabao Cup. This is concerning, and we have no clue what's going on.

The bottom-club Wolves also feature in this list with Tolu Arokodare. They took a big punt on the even bigger man, but he hasn't lived up to expectations. Three goals in 27 top-flight appearances is rubbish.

Liverpool's Florian Wirtz is another high-profile flop. He joined Liverpool in a £100million club-record deal last July, but his performances have been nowhere near the level we saw at Leipzig. After registering 10 goals and 13 assists in the Bundesliga last season, Wirtz's first goal involvement in the Premier League came after 16 games.

Tottenham Hotspur's Xavi Simons is also on the list. After finishing 17th last season but winning the Europa League, they were expected to have a much better 2025/26. However, Simons' performances have been nowhere near the level we saw at Leipzig, and he has as many goals as he does red cards in the Premier League.

Harvey Elliott at Aston Villa is another flop. This was supposed to be the perfect transfer for Elliott, but after three Premier League appearances under Unai Emery, the Spaniard decided he didn’t fancy the 23-year-old. Elliott has only appeared two more times in the top flight since Emery told everyone the club did not want to sign him permanently.

Newcastle United's Nick Woltemade is also on the list. He did pretty well at the start of his Magpies career, but since his brace at home to Chelsea in December, the big German has zero goals in the top flight and one across all competitions. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe moved him a little deeper, but it’s simply not worked.

Anthony Elanga at Newcastle United is another flop. After two extremely productive years at Nottingham Forest, he has registered zero goals and only one assist in 27 league appearances for the Magpies. His end product has been pretty abysmal.

The most expensive player in Premier League history, Alexander Isak at Liverpool, is also on the list. He has missed a large chunk of the season after getting his leg snapped in half by Micky van de Ven while scoring against Spurs. The lack of a pre-season was a contributing factor to him looking off the pace.

Finally, Yoane Wissa at Newcastle United is the worst signing of the season. Despite having every reason to put Isak top, our man is Wissa, one of two men bought to replace the Swedish striker. Wissa has three goals in 22 appearances after missing the first four months of the season with a knee injury. Newcastle absolutely chucked it last summer, and the Wissa deal is the worst of a catastrophic bunch.

In conclusion, these flops have had a significant impact on their respective clubs. While some have been high-profile signings, others have been left in the lurch. It's clear that management plays a crucial role in these flops, and it will be interesting to see how these clubs recover and rebuild for the future.
